Fábio Brum

Fábio was born in Rio de Janeiro. During his career he has won several prizes at major Solo Competitions including: First Prize at the 2009 Concurso Internacional de Trompeta Juan García Marín, "Judge's Prize" at the 2008 Ellsworth Smith International Trumpet Competition and First Prize at the 2003 National Trumpet Competition College Etude Division.

 

And; Second Prize at the 2001 International Trumpet Guild Solo Competition (USA); Second Prize at the 2003 National Trumpet Competition College Solo Division (USA). He was also a finalist at the 2008 1st International Trumpet Competition in Tuscany (Italy) and at the 2006 “Città di Porcia” International Trumpet Competition (Italy).

 

Brum has played with numerous Orchestras and Ensembles in Brazil, Venezuela, United States, Mexico, Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary and Serbia, both as soloist and trumpeter. Among them: Orquesta de la Radio Television Española "ORTVE" (Spain); Orchester des Staatstheater Darmstad (Germany); Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla (Spain); Orquesta Filarmónica de Las Palmas (Spain); Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro (Brazil); Orquesta Ciudad de Granada (Spain); Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de Minas Gerais (Brazil); Orquestra Simón Bolivar del Tachira (Venezuela); The Brass Company Quintet (United States); Royal Brass Quintet (Spain).

 

He has also received many awards and scholarships, including: 2008 Novara Award (Recital and Scholarship at Novara "Festival Fiati"); DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service); Baden-Württemberg Stipendium; Lake Placid Institute Scholarship; Leon Rapier Memorial Scholarship; Melvin Dickinson Scholarship.

 

Brum serves as a founding member and trumpet teacher of the Festival de Trompeta del Estado Táchira, Venezuela. In 2008 he was a teacher at the "Segundo Festival Internacional de Trompetas Rafael Mendez" in Mexico. Also in 2008 he was featured as a guest soloist at the 2008 Spanish Brass Festival Alzira in Spain. He has been a trumpet and music instructor at the Concordia University Summer Music Camp in Nebrasca, United States.

 

He began, at the age of 8, to study music and trumpet with his grandfather Inácio Pepino. By the age of 9 he made his debut with the Banda Irmãos Pepino. At the age of 12, with the help of João Urbano, he became the principal solo trumpet of the same band in which he was part until he was 15. In Brazil he also studied the trumpet with teachers, Naílson Simões at Universidade do Rio de Janeiro (UNIRIO), Paulo Mendonça at Conservatório Brasileiro de Música and Nelson Oliveira at Escola Nacional de Música da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ).

 

At the age of 16 he went to Louisville, KY (United States) for a High School Exchange Program where he stayed until he was 21 graduating with his Bachelor´s Degree. There he studied with Dr. Michael Tunnell at the University of Louisville where he participated in many University Ensembles and also various recording projects. During those years in the United States, Fábio also won the University of Louisville Orchestra Solo Competition, the Louisville Youth Orchestra Solo Competition, received the "Outstanding Soloist" Prize at the DIxie Classic Concert Performance as well as being the First Chair Trumpeter at the All Collegiate Wind Ensenble (KY) and the All State Orchestra (KY).

 

Fábio Brum graduated with the Diplom-Musiker im Künstlerischen Hauptfach Trompete in 2005 from Prof. Reinhold Friedrich´s class at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe (Germany) where he also took classes from, Dr. Prof. Edward H. Tarr, Laura Vokobratovic and Klaus Bräcker for a period of two years. Recently Fábio received trumpet clases with Eric Aubier in Paris.

 

He has participated in Master Classes with professors Reinhold Friedrich, Eric Aubier, Maurice André, Guy Touvron, Adolph Herseth, Mark Gould, Jeans Lindeman, Markus Stockhausen, Edward Carrol, Juanjo Serna Salvador, Carlos Benetó Grau, Oscar Brum, Benjamin Moreno, John Wallace, James Thompson, Michael Sachs, Crispian Steele-Perkins, Ian Muirhead, Stacy Blair, John Hagstrom, Tim Morrison, Allen Vizzuti, Vincent DiMartino, among others.

 

Currently Fábio lives in Seville (Spain) where he has been very active as a soloist, playing with different orchestras and smaller ensembles and also teaching masterclasses.
